    During the Civil War, Folly Island was primarily a major Union staging area and supply depot for the siege of Charleston, South Carolina. Union forces occupied the island from May 1863 to 1865, building roads, forts, and artillery batteries. The only fighting on the island was a small Confederate reconnaissance mission on May 10, 1863. Folly Island remained under Union control for the rest of the war. It was used as the staging area for the Battles of Fort Wagner, which were fought between July and September 1863. Morris Island was the location of Fort Wagner; the Second Battle of Fort Wagner was depicted in the 1989 film Glory.
