Donald requesting travel reimbursement after mileage disallowed, letter with light stain; cover reduced a bit at left, F.-V.F. territorial use.

Rose Hill, Harris County, was settled by P.W. Rose before 1836. The Post Office was opened in 1856.
Nathaniel Hart Davis moved to Texas in 1840, arriving in Montgomery. He served as county attorney, commissioner, and Chief Justice of the 13th Judicial District from 1867- to 1807. Davis was a member of the Somervell Experidition, serving under Coloney Joseph L. Bennett in whose home he lived during his first years in Texas.Realized: $50

(Slavery) 1834 (Dec. 5) Lynchburg Va. to New York N.Y., well written four-page slavery letter describing someone stopping by their house that had just purchased 12 slaves that they put in the basement, separation of the wife and husbands, etc. poignant window into the period - philosophical commentary, entered mails with "Lynchg. Va. Dec 5" cds with matching "Paid" handstamp and red ms. "25" rating; edge tear and wear, some splitting, F.-V.F., well written view of the period.
