    1851, 12¢ gray black, positions 21-22/31-32R1, block of four with prominent stitch watermark on bottom pair, large margins to in at left, small portions of adjoining stamps at top and bottom, light grid cancels, light crease and closed tear at bottom, Fine appearance, a very rare used block of this issue with a stitch watermark, ex-Allen ; with 1984 P.F. certificate.

    Scott Retail for block without premium for the variety -- which is rare with fewer than 15 singles recorded by 12¢ 1851 specialist James Allen. This is the best example of the variety he has seen.

    1851, 12¢ black, part India paper, position 19R1, large to huge margins, intense color and crisp impression usually associated with India paper, pretty blue "Philadelphia Pa., Jan. 31" circa 1852 cds cancel, light vertical crease, Very Fine to Extremely Fine appearance.

    1851, 12¢ black, very thin paper, position 40L1, paper 0.00181-.00211 thickness, large margins except slightly in at left, crisp impression, circular grid cancel, F.-V.F., Allen remarked that this is one of the thinnest papers he has seen.

    1851, 12¢ gray black, stitch watermark , large to huge margins with parts of three other stamps confirming position 33R1 (parts of 23, 24 and 34R1), detailed impression, light red circular grid cancel, stitch watermark shows clearly at top, thin spot, an Extremely Fine appearing jumbo.

    This is the discovery copy by Jim Allen of the capture of the dot from 23R1 in upper right corner. A rare capture of this plate marking, two seen by Allen on any copies or multiples in 35 years. The stitch watermark is scarce with less than 8 recorded by J. Allen over a 35 year study.
