"Georgetown S.C., Apr. 23rd/65", "datelined letter from Union soldier back home, yellow cover bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by " U.S. Ship " straightline, matching "Philadelphia Pa. May 6, 1865" cds to Peterboro N.Y., some interesting military content " the regt. came back to this town last night about dark & they was a hard looking lot of men I can tell you they hav had a prety tuff time so I can tell you they hav been gone for 21 days…they have been about 350 miles same of the line they hav had to march through swamps where they was in the mud & water up to their knees & some of this line had to fight all day & march all night…there is some talk of piece…I shall hav to close for the boat leaves here in the morning "; reduced slightly at left, Very Fine.

On February 25, 1865, Georgetown S.C. was occupied by U.S. naval forces led by Admiral John Dahlgren and the Union flag raised. On March 1, 1865, control of the town was taken over by federal occupation troops, including units of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment and U.S. Colored Troops. It was occupied for the duration of the war and into the reconstruction era until 1868.
