Wrapper, 1860, Nesbitt 2nd Issue, 1¢ blue on buff, period after "POSTAGE", wrapper canceled by contrasting red "Turner, Me. Mar 30" cds to Soldier, Co. D 23rd Maine, Washington D.C., turned with 1¢ blue (63) tied by large circular grid cancel to North Auburn Me.; 1¢ creased from wrapper fold, Fine and rare turned forwarded wrapper use; with 2014 P.F. certificate.

Envelope, 1864, Nesbitt 4th Issue, 2¢ black on buff, "U.S. POST" above, wide design, canceled by cork cancel duplexed with "Washington D.C. Apr 19" cds to Pepperell Mass. with C.S. Whitman & Co. Solicitors of Patents illustrated ad showing a finished U.S. Capitol building ; some wear, light staining on reverse, F.-V.F.

The cast-iron dome of the U.S. Capitol was completed in January 1866. Construction began in 1856, and the dome was finished after the Civil War. The dome replaced an earlier wooden dome and was a significant feature of the Capitol's expansion in the 1850s.Realized: $170

D.C." framed handstamp, "Returned to Sender" hand handstamp, reverse with "Washington D.C., Sep 24, 1894" "2, Transit" American Postal machine cancel and Alexandria (9.24) received, Very Fine and rare "compulsory" use.

The "1 Cent" one-line surcharge die was prepared and only used at Washington D.C. The surcharge was deemed to be unsatisfactory, and was immediately withdrawn from use. Subsequent surcharges contained the numeral "1" above "Cent" in a two-line configuration.Realized: $750
