Grant, tan portrait campaign design encircled in wreath with verse below "Hurrah! for Grant And good Government" on cover bearing 3¢ green (147) tied by target duplexed with "Gettysburg Pa. Sep 22" cds to Killingsworth Conn., reduced slightly at right, with matching campaign design lettersheet datelined "Gettysburg Pa. August 2, 1871", signature clipped, Very Fine.

Grant of Illinois, For Vice-President Henry Wilson of Massachusetts", Norris imprint across bottom, on cover bearing 1¢ ultramarine (145) tied by radial cork cancel to Winchester N.H., reduced a bit at right; with additional original Patriotic design with 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Friendship Wis. Nov 13" cds for comparison; reduced slightly at right, Very Fine and rare patriotic campaign design.

Horace Greeley was the editor of the New York Tribune and ran as the Liberal Republican and Democratic candidate in the 1872 presidential election, campaigning on a platform of government reform, "universal amnesty" for the South, and an end to Radical Reconstruction. Despite a spirited, unprecedented speaking tour, he was soundly defeated by incumbent Ulysses S. Grant in a landslide.Lot 244
