    Newport, R.I. "Registered", red 4½ x 48½mm straightline on 1854 folded letter bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) , margins to slightly in, tied by "Newport R.I. Aug 24" cds to Boston Mass., letter from George Bancroft to publishers Little & Brown discussing his work "The History of the American Revolution to the Treaty of Peace" to be added to five already published volumes, Very Fine.

Nov 23" cds ties left 10¢, other stamps tied by matching circle of wedges cancels to Concord Mass.; light soiling, no flap, 3¢ small tear, F.-V.F. Scott No. 89 $700 as used singles.

    The use of the term "money letter" by a border town was a common occurrence from a familiarity with Canadian registered letters. This second recorded example is also from the same correspondence to Mrs. A.C. Paige, Revere House, Boston Mass.

Sep 17, cds with "Registered" straightline and blue crayon "No 32" registry number on circa 1874 orange cover bearing 3¢ green (158) and 15¢ yellow orange (163) , rich colors, canceled by cork cancels and cross-roads duplexed with Derbyline cds to Troy N.H.; reduced slightly at left, Very Fine.

Va. Mar 30" cds to Brooklyn N.Y.; couple small stamp flaws, cover reduced at right, flap tears, F.-V.F. and unique 1869 issue registered franking.

    Registered, Oct 17 1889, Port Townsend, Wash., blue-green three-line registry postmark, ms. "81/75" registry numbers on red preprinted Samuel P. Hughes envelope to Howe, Nebraska with "D.E. Brown" handstamped return address bearing 8¢ Columbian (236) and 2¢ carmine (279B) canceled by bold Kicking Mule (AN-11) fancy cancels ; reduced slightly at left with small lower corner mend, otherwise Very Fine and attractive registered kicking mule use, ex-Gibson .

II (119) , centered to top, rich color, tied by "Grafton W. Va. Mar 14" double-circle datestamp to "Mouth of Seneca", Pendleton Co. N.Y., free franked by Internal Revenue agent at top right; reduced at sides, cover quite worn, Fine and unusual registered use, the free frank paid domestic postage but the 15¢ stamp was necessary to pay the registry fee, ex-Robertson .
