On April 26, 1882, Jerome C. Knowlton was appointed Postmaster of Ann Arbor, Michigan and during his tenure various cancellations were used signifying his different postal clerks. Harry Cox Nichels of Galt, Ontario came to the post office of Ann Arbor in 1884 at the age of 19 as a postal clerk. He and his friends, C.W. Berry (age 18) and Charles P. Bender worked as postal clerks under Knowlton until June 25, 1885, when Edward Duffy took over as Postmaster. Nickels and Berry were both students at University of Michigan where Knowlton became an assistant professor of law in the fall of 1885. Knowlton later became Dean of the Law School.Lot 1063
