    A CHOICE COVER CARRIED BY THE BICYCLE MAIL ROUTE POST OF CALIFORNIA.

    This inter-city service was established during the railroad union strike in 1894 by the Fresno agent for Victor bicycles, Arthur C. Banta. Service commenced on July 6 and was discontinued on July 18 when the strike ended. Only 380 letters were carried during the brief period of operation.

II (11A), neatly affixed overlapping and tied together by blue "Philadelphia Pa" cds, "Blood's Despatch Dec. 31 2 P.M." double-line cds on small cover to Lancaster Pa., 3¢ stamp with creases, neat and Very Fine appearing small cover, second with 15L14 acid tied, used with 3¢ dull red (26) on 1857 cover to Debuque, Iowa, 3¢ stamp pulled perf, Very Fine pair.

    RARE USE OF THE CITY DESPATCH POST ISSUE ON AN OUTBOUND LETTER.

    This cover dates from the two-month period (April-May 1842) when letters carried by the City Despatch Post to the mails for delivery outside the city were cancelled in manuscript and received no local post markings. Very few examples (less than six) of the City Despatch Post stamp are known on covers to other cities.
