    Minnesota Mine, Mich., Ontonagon Co., 13 June, bold strike of large Zevely balloon-style cds ties 3¢ dull red (26) on cover to West Novi, Mich.; reduced slightly at right, Very Fine and choice strike.

    Illustrated in Alexander-Simpson, p. 78-79 #16. This cds was manufactured by Zevely out of wood.

    Minnesota Mine, Michigan in Ontonagon County on the Upper Peninsula was the most productive native copper mine in the United States 1855-62. It was discovered in 1847 and mined aboriginally dug to 1,200 feet producing 35 million lbs of refined copper.
